The U.S. set a condition for Russia regarding Ukraine at the G20 summit
Washington has made it clear to Moscow that Russia cannot count on economic support or the conclusion of new agreements until it ends the war against Ukraine.
In this way, the U.S. has linked further economic cooperation with Russia to an end to the war. Moscow must now respond to this demand.
The U.S.’s Firm Stance
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held a bilateral meeting with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov on the sidelines of the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting in Asheville, North Carolina.
According to Reuters, the U.S. official made it clear to the Russian side that economic cooperation cannot be expanded while the war against Ukraine continues.
Sources told the agency that U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan was discussed during the conversation. However, when Siluanov attempted to move on to issues of mutual interest, Bessent, according to a Reuters source, cut him off and stated: “Nothing is possible until the war ends.”
The Russian Ministry of Finance stated that the parties discussed financial cooperation within the framework of the G20.
Reuters notes, however, that the meeting took place against the backdrop of Siluanov’s first in-person participation in a G20 event since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Siluanov attended in person for the first time
Prior to this, the Russian side had not sent the finance minister to in-person G20 meetings since the start of the full-scale war. The current talks in Asheville marked the first such instance.
