Starmer is trying to hold his ground after Labour's election defeat – Bloomberg
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is preparing for an important political speech in the wake of Labour’s heavy defeat in the local elections. Following the loss of control of the Welsh Assembly, talk within the party of a possible leadership contest has intensified.
This is reported in a Bloomberg article.
Last Thursday’s local elections dealt a serious blow to Labour. Nigel Farage’s populist Reform UK party secured victories in various regions across the country. Following this, talk within the Labour Party has intensified regarding a potential leadership change ahead of the next general election, which is scheduled to take place no later than August 2029.
In his speech, the prime minister will promise to “meet the challenges” and acknowledge that “incremental change is not enough.” He also plans to declare his intention to strengthen relations with the EU after Brexit. Starmer will devote special attention to the issues of the cost of living and national security.
Little-known MP Catherine West has already declared her readiness to compete for the leadership if no stronger candidate emerges. Meanwhile, Health Secretary Wes Stitting’s allies are also urging him to enter the internal party race.
The betting platform Polymarket estimates the probability of Starmer’s resignation by the end of the year at 70%. Against this backdrop, the pound sterling fell by 0.4% on Sunday evening to approximately $1.357.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who is backed by the Labour Party’s left wing, is currently unable to participate in the leadership race because he is not a member of Parliament. Some party members are deliberately dragging out the process so that Burnham can secure a seat in the House of Commons and join the race.
This has created a paradoxical situation: Burnham’s allies are effectively backing Starmer to buy time for their own candidate.
Earlier, Starmer spoke of growing tensions in relations with the U.S.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during which they discussed increasing pressure on the aggressor. The leaders paid particular attention to combating Russia’s shadow fleet and London’s contributions to the PURL program to strengthen the Ukrainian army.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer convened a meeting of the government’s emergency committee in connection with the knife attack in London.
