Russia's withdrawal from Kidal, Mali, has damaged the Kremlin's image in Africa – CNN

Russia's withdrawal from Kidal, Mali, has damaged the Kremlin's image in Africa – CNN

The withdrawal of Russian troops from the strategically important city of Kidal in northern Mali in April was not only a loss of ground for the Kremlin but also a blow to its reputation. According to CNN, this move weakened Russia’s influence in the region and intensified criticism of its military presence in Africa.

Experts view the evacuation of the “African Corps” (a unit that replaced the Wagner Group under the auspices of the Russian Ministry of Defense) as a humiliating defeat for Moscow, which had sought to establish itself as the primary guarantor of security in the Sahel—a region that has become the epicenter of global terrorism.

The situation in Mali escalated on April 25, when Al-Qaeda militants and Tuareg separatists carried out a coordinated attack, the largest in the past decade. This alliance allowed the insurgents to quickly seize a number of military facilities. Russian troops, finding themselves surrounded in Kidal, were forced to negotiate with the militants for a safe corridor to retreat. This incident demonstrated the limitations of Russia’s ability to protect its foreign allies, a pattern already observed in Syria, Venezuela, and Iran.

The city of Kidal, captured by the Malian army and the Russians in 2023, was a symbol of Moscow’s victory over Western influence in the region. After the military juntas of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger severed ties with France and the UN, Russia filled this niche, offering military support in exchange for access to natural resources. However, current events cast doubt on the viability of such a strategy.

The crisis in the country deepened following the death of Mali’s Defense Minister Sadio Kamara—a key architect of the rapprochement with Russia—who was killed in a suicide bombing. Now, radical groups are threatening a complete blockade of the capital, Bamako, calling on the population to rise up against the junta.

Analysts note that Vladimir Putin’s promises of military aid, made at the “Russia-Africa” summit, have proven ineffective in practice. Although Russian “instructors” are present in the Central African Republic and Libya, their successes remain tenuous. In the Sahel, however, the Kremlin’s security model does not address fundamental problems: corruption, poverty, and interethnic conflicts.

Despite reputational damage and Tuareg calls for the complete withdrawal of Russian troops, the Malian junta finds itself in a bind. Although the country is attempting to diversify its arms purchases through China and Turkey, Russia remains the only party willing to send its soldiers directly into the combat zone. According to experts, the current Malian government effectively has no choice but to continue its dependent cooperation with Moscow, even despite the latter’s obvious ineffectiveness.

As a reminder, the Russian African Corps is retreating from cities in Mali following a jihadist offensive.

Units of the so-called African Corps of the Russian Ministry of Defense have left the strategically important city of Kidal in Mali. The withdrawal took place against the backdrop of an unprecedented attack by Tuareg rebels and Islamists on several regions of the country simultaneously.

Representatives of the Tuareg rebels claim that government forces and their allies left Kidal in accordance with a prior agreement. At the same time, there is no consensus among Russian Z-channels and military bloggers regarding the reasons for the withdrawal.
