Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, saw its first snowfall in 15 years. This unusual occurrence for the region was caused by a sharp drop in temperature due to the influx of Antarctic air masses.

Due to the sharp drop in temperature, some areas of the country’s South Island recorded temperatures as low as -9 °C.

Snowfall has become a rare occurrence in Wellington, where winter temperatures are usually much milder. Local residents are actively sharing photos of the city’s snow-covered streets and landscapes.

The inclement weather persisted on Wednesday. Temperatures dropped to -9°C in three towns on the South Island. Due to the severe weather, some highways had to be closed, and powerful hailstorms struck certain areas of the North Island’s east coast in the morning.

In Dunedin, one of the largest cities on the South Island, students were sent home on Tuesday following a heavy snowfall. At Christchurch International Airport, one aircraft was forced to abort its landing due to strong winds and rain.
