An ammonia leak in Kyiv caused by the Russian Federation's attack has been contained; there is no further threat

The ammonia leak in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi District, which occurred as a result of a Russian missile and drone attack, was quickly contained. There is currently no further threat to residents.

The Ministry of Economy reported that emergency services responded quickly to the incident and took the necessary measures to address the consequences.

Residents of the district do not need to take any additional safety precautions; the situation is under control by the relevant authorities.

It is noted that as a result of the Russian attack, debris and the shock wave partially damaged the production equipment at one of the enterprises. The State Environmental Inspectorate inspected the scene and documented the damage, including an uncontrolled release of pollutants into the atmosphere.

“This involved isolated (shrapnel) damage to the cooling tower fans and the piping of the ammonia storage tank, which led to a partial leak,” the ministry explained.

It is noted that the plant’s employees took measures to prevent further ammonia leakage by shutting off the valves.

According to preliminary data, the estimated volume of the leak was over 100 liters, some of which entered the cooling system (cooling tower).

After emergency response teams arrived at the scene, the ammonia leak was quickly contained, and there is no longer a risk of further leakage. During the assessment, a slight excess of ammonia (NH₃) concentration was recorded on the plant’s premises.

At the same time, no concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), or hydrogen cyanide (HCN) were detected; there is no threat to the health of residents living near the affected area.

“The inspection is calculating the extent of the damage caused in accordance with the approved methodology as a result of uncontrolled emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere caused by military aggression,” the ministry emphasized.
