Solar Eclipse to Disrupt Electricity Production in Europe – Figaro

The solar eclipse, which will take place on August 12, 2026, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., will cause a temporary drop in solar power generation in Europe. 

According to data from the French grid operator RTE, at its peak, solar power generation in the EU will decrease by nearly 9,700 MW, which is equivalent to about 3.7% of the EU’s installed solar capacity.

The largest drops in production are expected in Germany (a decrease of 3,300 MW) and Spain (3,000 MW), where the total phase of the eclipse will be visible. In France, solar generation may drop by approximately 1,800 MW (about 3% of national production); however, operators do not expect any disruptions for consumers, as the event will occur at the end of the day after the peak of solar activity has passed. The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) will oversee the balancing of power systems.
