A British court has allowed China to build a mega-embassy in London
The High Court of England and Wales dismissed a lawsuit filed by local residents against the construction of a new Chinese embassy in London, paving the way for the project to move forward.
The lawsuit was filed by the Royal Mint Residents’ Association (RMCRA), which sought to challenge the government’s approval of the construction of the Chinese diplomatic complex.
The project for the new “mega-embassy” has drawn criticism from local residents, as well as representatives of the Conservative Party and Reform UK. They fear that the diplomatic complex could be used for espionage, surveillance of dissidents, and suppression of protests.
Further concern has been raised by the fact that the new embassy is planned to be built near London’s key communication cables, which are part of the city’s critical infrastructure.
Despite this, British intelligence agencies assured the government that all necessary security measures had been taken into account, after which the authorities finally approved the construction of the diplomatic facility on the site of the former Royal Mint.
