Sumy Oblast will be protected from FPV drones over an additional 37 km
In the Sumy region, protection of logistics routes against Russian FPV drones will be strengthened. The Cabinet of Ministers has allocated 70 million hryvnias from the state budget’s reserve fund to install anti-drone systems along an additional 37 kilometers of roads.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has decided to allocate 70 million hryvnias to install anti-drone defenses along roads in the Sumy region. These are routes regularly used by the military, rescue workers, emergency services, and civilians. The Sumy region remains a frontline area and is regularly subjected to Russian attacks. FPV drones, which can attack vehicles while they are in motion, have become a particular danger to people and vehicles.
That is why special protective structures are being installed on certain roads. They are intended to reduce the risk of drones striking vehicles and help make travel along these critical routes safer. With this new funding, authorities plan to protect an additional 37 km of roads.
Who Depends on These Routes
It’s not just about military transport. These roads are used by the Defense Forces, emergency and rescue services, as well as civilian vehicles. Vitaliy Kindrativ, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Economy and Environment, emphasized that for frontline regions, anti-drone protection of roads is directly linked to people’s safety. “For frontline regions, anti-drone protection of logistics routes is, first and foremost, a matter of public safety and the stable operation of critically important logistics,” Kindrativ said.
According to him, the allocated funds will make it possible to protect an additional 37 kilometers of routes in the Sumy region. “The allocated 70 million hryvnias will make it possible to strengthen protection along another 37 kilometers of routes in Sumy Oblast, which are used by the Defense Forces, emergency and rescue services, as well as civilian transport,” the deputy minister noted.
Why Protections Must Be Installed Quickly
Russian troops are actively using FPV drones to strike areas near the front lines. For such drones, a vehicle on an open road can be an easy target. Therefore, anti-drone structures on roads serve a practical purpose—to create physical cover over the route and reduce the potential for air attacks.
The Ministry of Economy and Environment emphasizes that, given the constant attacks, such solutions must be implemented as quickly as possible. “Given the constant attacks by FPV drones, such solutions must be implemented as quickly as possible,” Kindrativ noted. At the same time, this does not mean that all roads in the region will be covered with protective nets. Specific sections will be identified on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the security situation and the needs of the military.
Where Exactly Will the Protective Measures Be Installed?
The exact list of sections where the structures will be installed has not yet been disclosed. They will be selected based on the situation on the ground and the recommendations of military command.
The Ministry of Defense has approved the allocation of funds on the condition that the relevant sections are first coordinated with military units. Afterward, they must be incorporated into the military command’s plans. This approach is necessary to prioritize the protection of routes that are most critical to the operations of the Defense Forces and essential services.
Anti-drone protection is also being implemented in other regions
Sumy Oblast is not the only region where roads are being given additional protection against drones. Similar structures are already being installed on key routes in other frontline regions. In particular, it was previously reported that anti-drone nets were being installed on roads in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. There, protective structures have already covered nearly 40 kilometers of roads.
For frontline regions, these structures have become yet another way to protect people and vehicles from drone attacks. While they cannot completely eliminate the threat, they are expected to reduce the risk of damage on the most dangerous sections.
Now, thanks to state funding, another 37 km of roads in the Sumy region will receive anti-drone protection. The government has allocated 70 million hryvnias for this purpose, and specific routes will be determined in consultation with the military, taking into account the security situation.
