July 1 Holiday: Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to Chinese Jurisdiction
On July 1, Hong Kong celebrates the anniversary of the establishment of the Special Administrative Region. It was on this day in 1997 that the United Kingdom handed Hong Kong over to China after more than 150 years of British rule. For the region, this date remains one of the most significant in modern history and is marked each year with official ceremonies, festive events, and commemorative activities.
Every year on July 1, Hong Kong residents celebrate the establishment of the Special Administrative Region. It was on this day in 1997 that the city officially came under the sovereignty of the People’s Republic of China after more than a century and a half of British rule.
