July 1 Holiday: Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to Chinese Jurisdiction

July 1 Holiday: Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to Chinese Jurisdiction

On July 1, Hong Kong celebrates the anniversary of the establishment of the Special Administrative Region. It was on this day in 1997 that the United Kingdom handed Hong Kong over to China after more than 150 years of British rule. For the region, this date remains one of the most significant in modern history and is marked each year with official ceremonies, festive events, and commemorative activities.

Every year on July 1, Hong Kong residents celebrate the establishment of the Special Administrative Region. It was on this day in 1997 that the city officially came under the sovereignty of the People’s Republic of China after more than a century and a half of British rule. This event was one of the most significant in the history of modern Hong Kong and ushered in a new phase of development for the region.

The handover of Hong Kong took place in accordance with the Sino-British Joint Declaration, signed back in 1984. The document set forth the terms for the territory’s return to China and stipulated that after 1997, Hong Kong would operate under the “one country, two systems” principle. This meant that the region would retain its own economic system, judicial system, financial center, and a significant degree of internal self-governance for 50 years following the handover.

The official handover ceremony took place on the night of June 30–July 1, 1997. The event was attended by representatives from the United Kingdom and China, and the British flag was lowered for the last time over Hong Kong’s government buildings. Immediately afterward, the flags of the People’s Republic of China and the new Special Administrative Region were raised.

Since then, July 1 has been an official public holiday in Hong Kong. It is a day off, and the city hosts solemn ceremonies attended by regional leaders, representatives of China’s central government, military personnel, and the public. Every year, a flag-raising ceremony takes place, which is broadcast by local television channels. Concerts, cultural festivals, exhibitions, sporting events, and festive programs for children are organized in various districts of Hong Kong. Museums open themed exhibitions dedicated to the city’s history, while parks and public spaces become venues for family celebrations.

For many years, one of the most famous traditions was the large-scale evening fireworks display over Victoria Harbor. Hundreds of thousands of people came to watch them every year. However, in recent years, the format of the celebrations has changed repeatedly depending on the security situation, weather conditions, or decisions by local authorities.

For many residents, this day holds different meanings. Some view it as a celebration of Hong Kong’s return to China and an important historical date. Others use it as an opportunity to express their civic stance. In various years, peaceful demonstrations involving tens of thousands of people have taken place in the city on July 1, during which people have advocated for democratic freedoms, electoral reforms, or the protection of Hong Kong’s autonomy.

As a result, the day marking the establishment of the Special Administrative Region combines official celebrations with public debates. It is this unique aspect that makes it one of the most notable days on Hong Kong’s calendar. Interestingly, Hong Kong has its own flag and coat of arms, even though it is part of China. The flag features a white five-petaled bougainvillea flower on a red background. This symbol is familiar to every resident of the city and is always featured during festive events.

Another interesting fact is that even after 1997, Hong Kong retained a separate economic system, its own currency—the Hong Kong dollar—a separate customs territory, and its status as one of the world’s largest financial centers. That is why its development model has long been considered unique. During the celebrations, there are also often charity events, cultural festivals organized by various communities, performances by artistic groups, and themed tours. For tourists, this is an opportunity to experience the city in a festive atmosphere, and for locals, it’s a chance to spend the day with family or friends.
