Thailand is shortening the visa-free stay period for tourists

Thailand is shortening the visa-free stay period for tourists

Thai authorities plan to halve the visa-free stay period for foreign nationals—from 60 to 30 days.

The initiative was announced by Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, who explained that the decision was driven by the need to strengthen immigration controls.

“We believe that 60 days is perhaps too long, and some individuals who are not genuine tourists are exploiting the visa-free regime for illegal purposes,” the foreign minister stated.

According to him, the government aims to close loopholes for those who abuse the country’s hospitality for illegal work or other activities that do not correspond to the status of a traveler.

According to Bloomberg, the initiative was a response to numerous complaints from local businesses.

Thai business owners note that their income is under threat due to the illegal activities of migrants arriving under the guise of vacationers.

Of particular concern is the growing number of foreigners engaged in illegal business in tourist areas.

Preparations for the changes began under the previous administration, but consideration of the issue was postponed due to the elections.

Currently, the Minister of Foreign Affairs is consulting with relevant agencies but emphasizes that he does not anticipate any obstacles to the final adoption of this decision.

In addition to shortening the length of stay, the government plans to review the overall system of visa categories.

Sihasak Phuangketkeow noted that there are currently too many categories, so it would be advisable to merge some of them to simplify administration and increase transparency.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has already ordered the creation of a special working group to conduct a detailed review of the current regulations.

The Cabinet’s main goal is to strike a balance between national security and supporting the tourism industry, which is critical to the national economy.

Thailand has stated that it will agree to a ceasefire on the border with Cambodia only on the condition of the complete withdrawal of Cambodian troops and the demining of the border area.

As a reminder, Thailand has imposed a curfew along the border with Cambodia.

Thailand has also announced the continuation of hostilities with Cambodia.
