The Guardian featured 20 photos of the week from around the world

The Guardian has published a selection of 20 photographs capturing events from the past week in various countries around the world. The photos show wildfires in the U.S., Canada, and France; an earthquake in Colombia; Russian strikes on Zaporizhzhia; a solar eclipse; and rescue operations.

In California, Washington State, and British Columbia, Canada, photographers captured firefighters battling wildfires. In British Columbia, authorities declared a state of emergency due to the rapid spread of the fires: nearly 22,000 people were ordered to evacuate, and another 9,700 were warned to be prepared to leave their homes.

Some of the footage focuses on the earthquake near Cali, Colombia, where rescue workers searched for survivors amid the rubble of collapsed buildings. Perreira Mayor Mauricio Salazar reported that 65 buildings had collapsed in the city, and people may still be trapped in at least 15 of them.

In Zaporizhzhia, photographers captured rescuers and firefighters at the sites of Russian strikes. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that during the attack on the city, the Russian Federation—an aggressor state—used ballistic missiles supplied by North Korea.

The selection also includes photos of people watching the solar eclipse in London and the total phase of the eclipse in Lodoso, Spain. Other images include the search for bodies following earthquakes in La Guaira, Venezuela, Israeli military patrols in Nablus on the West Bank, and migrants attempting to cross the English Channel from northern France.
