Hungary’s ruling party, “Tisa,” has nominated former Supreme Court Chief Justice András Baku as its candidate for the country’s presidency. The 73-year-old lawyer won a secret ballot among three candidates, and parliament could formally approve his nomination as early as August 11.

The party’s parliamentary group selected Baka by secret ballot on Saturday. He was chosen from among three potential candidates. Since “Tisa” holds a two-thirds majority in parliament, lawmakers are expected to support Baka. The parliamentary vote is scheduled for Tuesday, August 11.
András Baka has many years of experience in the legal field. From 1991 to 2008, he served two terms as a judge on the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Baka has also worked as a visiting professor at several universities in the United States. He was invited to give lectures in France and West Germany. He was also involved in national politics. From 1990 to 1991, Baka served as an independent lawmaker representing the Hungarian Democratic Forum, although he was never a member of that party.
In 2009, the Hungarian Parliament elected him president of the country’s Supreme Court. Baka became particularly well-known following a conflict with the government of then-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. In 2011, he was removed from his position as president of the Supreme Court before the end of his term. One of the reasons was that Baka had publicly criticized the Orbán government’s judicial reforms. In his view, these reforms could have jeopardized the independence of the judiciary.
Now, Baka may return to national politics as president. If Parliament endorses his candidacy on August 11, the new head of state will be able to take office on the eighth day following the announcement of the results of the secret ballot.
