The traditional Christmas market in Magdeburg is at risk of being shut down

In Magdeburg, a dispute continues between the city authorities, police and traders over the holding of a traditional Christmas market. The mayor's office refused to issue a permit for the event, which could again become a target for extremists, citing a recommendation from the Land Administrative Office. Despite this, organizers have already begun setting up stalls in the city's central square.

The mayor of Magdeburg, Simone Borris, expressed hope that the fair would go ahead. She warned against "capitulation" to the consequences of the attack that took place last year, when a terrorist car rammed into the crowd, killing six people and injuring more than 300, including a Ukrainian citizen. Borris noted that the insurance may lead to other cities' organizers of other fairs also refusing to hold their events.

In case of further denial of the permit, the fate of the fair will remain uncertain. The trial of the attacker who committed the terrorist attack at last year's fair has already begun, adding to the tension.
