Trump is undermining peace talks for the sake of media attention – The New York Times

U.S. President Donald Trump is undermining traditional diplomatic tools for achieving peace by mistaking temporary lulls for the definitive resolution of conflicts. Donald Trump has undermined the ceasefire—a crucial tool in armed conflicts—on a global scale by replacing the long-term, technical work on peace agreements with sensational headlines in the media

This is reported by The New York Times.

Researchers note that successful peace agreements over the past decades have typically required more than four years of painstaking work following a ceasefire. In contrast, the White House’s current approach ignores the need for independent monitoring of the front lines and the involvement of professional diplomats. This leads to situations where declared ceasefires—such as Putin’s on May 9—do not halt active hostilities but instead become part of Russia’s charade to prepare for new offensives.

Due to the lack of a political foundation and the replacement of experts with individuals loyal to the president, the idea of a “silence regime” is losing credibility as a first step toward a stable peace. Trump has repeatedly declared that the war in Ukraine is nearly over, but these statements are primarily of domestic political significance. Critics emphasize that such a strategy allows the aggressors to manipulate the negotiation process while international attention is focused on short-lived positive news.

Trump stated that the U.S. does not need help on the issue of Iran.

Iran rejected Trump’s claims about transferring uranium to the U.S. and accused him of manipulation.
