Trump and Xi Jinping discussed the war in Ukraine and the global situation

On May 14, the leaders of the United States and China—specifically Donald Trump and Xi Jinping—discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine during talks in Beijing. The two sides also addressed the situation in the Middle East and developments on the Korean Peninsula.

This was reported with reference to the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

As noted, the parties exchanged views on key international and regional issues. “The heads of the two states exchanged views on major international and regional issues, such as the situation in the Middle East, the Korean Peninsula, and the ‘Ukrainian crisis,’” the report states.

At the same time, the Chinese side did not disclose any details regarding discussions on Russia’s war against Ukraine or other international topics.

During the talks, Xi Jinping paid special attention to the issue of Taiwan. The Chinese leader stated that this issue is crucial for the stability of Sino-American relations.

“The Taiwan issue is the most important in Sino-American relations. If it is handled properly, bilateral relations will be generally stable,” Xi said. He emphasized that peace in the Taiwan Strait is in the interests of both China and the U.S.

At the same time, the Chinese leader warned Washington of the risk of deteriorating relations in the event of an escalation over Taiwan. “Otherwise, clashes and even conflicts will arise between the two countries, which will pose a major threat to the entire relationship,” Xi Jinping stated.

As a reminder, Trump arrivedin China for the first time in nearly a decade.
