Trump did not invite Putin to the G20 summit in Miami, but he is not opposed to it

The U.S. president denied reports that an official invitation had been sent to the Russian president to attend the G20 summit, despite statements to the contrary from the Russian Foreign Ministry. Donald Trump noted that a visit by the Russian leader could be beneficial, but expressed doubt that such a trip would take place at all.

Sky News reports on the White House’s position regarding Russia’s participation in the summit.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry claimed to have received indications that Putin might attend the summit, which is scheduled to take place in Florida. However, the U.S. side emphasizes that no official steps have been taken so far to ensure the presence of Russian representatives. The situation is complicated by the International Criminal Court’s existing arrest warrant for Putin, although the U.S. is not a party to the Rome Statute.

The G20 summit in Miami is viewed as a platform for discussing key global conflicts, particularly Russia’s war against Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East. Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to quickly end hostilities in Europe, but the format of the parties’ participation in the negotiations remains a subject of debate. Most G20 members oppose a return to full-fledged engagement with the aggressor until international law is restored. Thus, the question of Russia’s presence at the 2026 summit remains open only in theory.

The United States intends to invite Russian leader Vladimir Putin to the G20 leaders’ summit, scheduled for December in Miami. However, an official invitation has not yet been sent.

Earlier, The Washington Post reported that the United States intends to invite Putin to the G20 leaders’ summit, scheduled for December in Miami. However, an official invitation has not yet been sent.  The State Department stated that President Donald Trump supports Russia’s participation in the G20. “President Donald Trump has made it clear that Russia can participate in all G20 meetings, as the U.S. is focused on holding a successful and productive summit,” the department noted.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni publicly criticized the U.S. administration’s initiative to invite Putin to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami.
