Trump officially notified Congress of the resumption of the U.S. war with Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump has officially notified Congress of the resumption of military operations against Iran. The White House administration believes this marks the start of a new 60-day period during which the U.S. military can act without specific congressional approval.

In a letter to lawmakers, Trump stated that the military operations, which began on July 7, are “actions consistent with my duty to protect Americans and U.S. national interests.” According to the president, the decision was a response to Iran’s violations of agreements and attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The announcement has already sparked a new debate over the president’s authority to use military force without specific congressional authorization.
