Trump publishes image reading New America instead of New Mexico
US President Donald Trump posted an image on the Truth Social network in which the word “Mexico” in the name of the state of New Mexico was crossed out and replaced with the word “America.” As a result, the state’s name appeared in the image as New America.
No explanation for the post
Trump provided no official explanation for the publication. As Anadolu Agency reports, it is currently unknown whether the image was rhetorical in nature or related to possible administration plans to rename the state.
Local officials in New Mexico did not immediately respond to the US president’s post. The White House also did not provide an immediate comment in response to the agency’s request.

Previous changes to geographic names
The publication came after other Trump moves concerning geographic names. On January 20, 2025, he signed an executive order providing for the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This decision prompted objections from Mexico.
On August 27, Trump also signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America amid escalating trade tensions with Canada. New Mexico became a US territory in the mid-19th century after the Mexican-American War. The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo formally transferred the region, as well as California, to the United States.
