Sweden explains three scenarios for forming a government after the election

After Sweden’s parliamentary election on September 13, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson may remain in office, resign or face the rejection of his candidacy by parliament. The possible course of action after the vote was outlined by The Local Sweden.

Election results usually become known around midnight on voting day. Party leaders generally announce their intentions in speeches at around 1 a.m.

How Kristersson can remain prime minister

If the right-wing bloc has a majority, Kristersson may declare his intention to remain in office. If the incumbent head of government continues in office with an unchanged coalition configuration, his mandate is tested in a mandatory confirmation vote no earlier than September 29. It takes place the day after the newly elected parliament begins work and a new speaker is elected.

Kristersson has promised the Sweden Democrats a place in the government if the right-wing bloc wins. If the prime minister seeks to govern with a new party configuration, the usual practice is for him to resign so that a new vote can be held in parliament. The candidacy is approved if fewer than half of the 349 lawmakers vote against it.

Resignation or rejection of the candidacy

If Kristersson concludes that he and his government have lost the election, he will announce his resignation. The current speaker of parliament may then immediately begin consultations with party leaders. After the speaker is elected or re-elected, it is the speaker who submits a candidate for prime minister to parliament, which the newly elected parliament votes on after beginning work on September 28.

If more than half of lawmakers vote against a candidate, the speaker must hold new consultations and propose another candidate. The speaker may put candidates to a vote four times. If all four attempts fail, a new election vote is called.
