Ghana holds community dialogue on social protection — MyJoyOnline
Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, together with the Office of the Head of the Local Government Service, held a meeting with residents in Teshie, in the Ledzokuku Municipality, on social protection and other public issues. Participants discussed difficulties in accessing support, government programmes, and issues affecting vulnerable people and households, MyJoyOnline reports.
Community participation in social protection
Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection Agnes Naa Momo Lartey said that social protection is not only a government programme but also a shared national responsibility requiring active community participation. According to her, the authorities view this area as one of the key elements of national development, including for reducing poverty and vulnerability, social inclusion, and ensuring a dignified and productive life for citizens.
Lartey also mentioned the Social Protection Act, 2025, and the Social Protection Regulations, 2026, as steps to strengthen coordination and provide appropriate services in the country. She stressed the need for cooperation among local authorities, traditional leaders, religious organisations, community groups, and residents. Communities, she said, can help identify people who need support and facilitate their access to available programmes.

Information about government programmes
As part of the meetings, the ministry is working with the National Health Insurance Authority to provide free registration and insurance renewal for eligible vulnerable and low-income people. The minister also named the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty programme, the Ghana School Feeding Programme, Mahama Care, free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, free primary healthcare, and free sanitary pad provision.
Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku constituency Benjamin Narteh Ayiku supported holding the dialogue directly in the community. Officials and other meeting participants informed residents about domestic violence, child marriage, teenage pregnancy, human trafficking, child protection, the National Health Insurance Scheme, and the reassessment of LEAP programme beneficiaries. Residents asked questions, shared personal experiences, and raised social protection concerns.
