Trump threatened to destroy Iran's power plants over the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz

Trump threatened to destroy Iran's power plants over the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz

U.S. President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Tehran, demanding that the Strait of Hormuz be fully opened within 48 hours.

In a post on the social media platform Truth Social on March 22, 2026, he stated that if this condition is not met, U.S. forces will strike numerous power plants in the country, starting with the largest energy facility. According to Trump, passage through the strait must be restored without any threat to shipping.

This statement came shortly after the U.S. leader announced the early achievement of military objectives in the conflict. Trump claims that Iran’s leadership, its navy, and air force have already been destroyed, and the country has been left without any means of defense. Despite Tehran’s alleged willingness to reach an agreement, the U.S. president currently rejects this possibility, insisting on the immediate reopening of the strategic waterway. The situation is escalating amid previous accusations from Russia’s allies regarding an energy blockade in the region.

As a reminder, Tehran has begun allowing commercial vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz only for a fee.

Additionally, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the start of consultations with key partners on establishing a UN mechanism to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz.

Recall that war in the Middle East threatens global food security, according to Al Jazeera.

Donald Trump stated that after the “demise” of the Iranian regime, control of the Strait of Hormuz should be taken over by American allies. He criticizes Europe for its unwillingness to send ships to escort tankers. The U.S. is ready to leave patrolling to its allies if Iran falls.
