The Chief of the British General Staff called for readiness to launch a swift strike against Russia
The British Army must remain on high alert so that, in the event of a direct threat to NATO’s eastern flank, it can strike Russian occupation forces within minutes.
This was stated by the new Chief of the British General Staff, General Sir Roly Walker, during his speech. According to him, Alliance units and heavy weaponry on the front lines must be able to deploy, engage, and strike enemy targets within half an hour.
The British command plans to significantly increase the presence of long-range and autonomous combat systems on the bloc’s eastern borders by the end of this year, particularly in Estonia, where a British military contingent is currently stationed. General Walker emphasized that if strategic deterrence fails, the cost to the aggressor must be devastating and immediate—even before Russian Armed Forces units have time to advance from their staging areas. He candidly acknowledged that the country must have the moral and military readiness to sacrifice the lives of its soldiers in the name of global security, calling human blood the heaviest and most valuable currency, which determines a state’s real influence and authority in the world.
The Chief of the General Staff’s stern warning came against the backdrop of a deep internal crisis within the Royal Armed Forces and a defense budget deficit that has reached a critical 28 billion pounds sterling. Recently, due to the Labour government’s severe underfunding of the army and the threat of military exercises being canceled, Defense Minister John Healy and Minister for the Armed Forces Al Carnes resigned. Currently, General Walker is forced to lead the smallest British army in the last two centuries, which numbers only about 70,000 trained service members, and it is the Army that risks facing further large-scale cuts following the release of the government’s upcoming investment plan.
