Trump criticized the Pope over foreign policy issues
U.S. President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Pope Leo XIV, posting a lengthy message on his own social media platform, Truth Social.
On the night of April 13, the American leader accused the pontiff of excessive politicization of his activities and weakness on key global security issues.
The main point of the president’s criticism was the Vatican’s stance on Tehran’s nuclear program and the situation in Venezuela.
“I don’t want a Pope who believes Iran can have nuclear weapons,” the U.S. president emphasized, adding that the pontiff also holds a misguided position regarding the U.S. strategy toward Caracas.
The U.S. president called Venezuela the main source of large-scale drug trafficking and a country with “empty prisons,” whose leadership threatens regional stability.
According to Trump, the religious leader should not hinder Washington’s efforts to combat transnational crime and drug trafficking.
In his address, the U.S. president paid special attention to past events during the COVID-19 pandemic, accusing the Pope of indifference toward religious freedoms.
Trump emphasized that the Vatican did not show sufficient resolve when priests and pastors were arrested for holding religious services during the quarantine.
An interesting aspect of the post was the comparison of the pontiff to his brother Louis, for whom the U.S. president expressed his full sympathy.
“I like him much better because Louis is a true MAGA,” Trump wrote, using his famous political slogan to describe the Pope’s relative.
The U.S. president also suggested that the election of the American Leo XIV in 2025 was a politically motivated move by the Catholic Church.
According to Trump, the Vatican chose this particular candidate in order to be able to “best deal with President Donald Trump” in the White House.
At the end of his post, the U.S. president urged the pontiff to use common sense and stop pandering to representatives of radical left-wing political forces.
Donald Trump advised Leo XIV to focus on fulfilling his immediate spiritual duties rather than interfering in high politics.
