The withdrawal involves the Stryker Brigade, which is based in Wilzeck, Bavaria. According to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, the process of relocating the troops and their families is expected to be completed within 6 to 12 months.
A complete closure of the base is not expected: after the reduction, between 5,000 and 8,000 troops will continue to serve there.
In total, about 40,000 U.S. military personnel are currently stationed in Germany. Of these, approximately 16,000 are based at the Grafenwöhr training area, and another 10,000 are in Wilzeck. Together with civilian personnel and families, more than 30,000 Americans live in this region.
Consequences for the Region and Security
Wilzeck Mayor Torsten Gredler emphasized that such a move would be a serious blow to the city of 6,500. The American presence is critically important for the economy of this region, which is considered one of the least developed in Bavaria.
At the same time, the publication’s American sources note that this decision weakens NATO’s eastern flank in Europe, as tank commanders, pilots, and weapons specialists are leaving the region along with the contingent.
Bild notes that the decision to reduce the military presence may be linked to U.S. President Donald Trump’s dissatisfaction with remarks made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Merz had previously stated that Iran is capable of “humiliating the U.S.” in negotiations to end the conflict.
