U.S. President Donald Trump has begun an official meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing. The talks are taking place following the U.S. president's arrival at Tiananmen Square.
CNN reports this.
Donald Trump’s motorcade has now arrived at Tiananmen Square, in the very center of the Chinese capital, after which he stepped out of the car. Xi Jinping was waiting for him near the Great Hall of the People.
The Chinese leader greeted the U.S. president with a handshake, after which Trump shook hands and greeted the Chinese and American delegations.
Trump is accompanied by members of his national security and economic teams, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Pentagon Chief Pete Hagset, Trade Representative Jamison Greer, and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
In addition to representatives of the Trump administration, a delegation of corporate CEOs is also present at the event, including Jensen Huang (Nvidia) and Tim Cook (Apple).
After the handshakes, the welcoming ceremony began. Trump and Xi Jinping walked down the red carpet, while soldiers in uniform lined up to the sounds of ceremonial music.
A group of children also stood alongside the red carpet, greeting each other, jumping, and waving Chinese and American flags and bouquets of flowers.
According to CNN, the two leaders have a busy day ahead, including a bilateral meeting, followed by a cultural visit to the Temple of Heaven and a state banquet.
The leaders’ meeting will take place directly in the Great Hall of the People. This building is an important landmark and is often used to host political events, such as the annual sessions of the legislative body and the highest advisory body.
