Trump has issued an ultimatum to Europe regarding the deployment of forces to the Strait of Hormuz

Trump has issued an ultimatum to Europe regarding the deployment of forces to the Strait of Hormuz

U.S. President Donald Trump is demanding that European allies present concrete plans within a few days to ensure the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Bloomberg, citing a senior NATO official, Washington expects clear commitments from Alliance countries. This issue was discussed at meetings at the White House attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, as well as at the Pentagon and the State Department.

The U.S. demands came against the backdrop of a two-week ceasefire agreement reached the day before between Washington and Tehran. Trump stated that one of the key conditions is the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supplies pass. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance emphasized that Washington does not intend to abide by the terms of the truce if Iran continues to block the waterway, as the agreement provides for a ceasefire in exchange for free navigation.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important region for global energy security, and any instability in this area directly affects global fuel prices. European countries are currently reviewing the U.S. request, as the deployment of naval forces requires internal political approvals and coordination within NATO. The Trump administration’s position indicates an intention to shift part of the burden of ensuring security in the region onto its allies. At the same time, the situation surrounding Iran remains tense due to threats of renewed hostilities should the terms of the agreement not be met. The U.S. emphasizes that control over the straits is a critical factor for the stability of the global economy. Experts note that such an ultimatum could test the Alliance’s unity and Europe’s readiness for active operations beyond its borders. So far, officials from leading European nations have not provided detailed comments on the timeline for preparing their plans. The situation is under constant monitoring by international energy markets and diplomatic agencies.

As a reminder, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, during which the parties plan to finalize a definitive agreement.

Iran agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz to shipping for two weeks—for the duration of the ceasefire with the U.S. This agreement is part of broader negotiations aimed at de-escalation in the region.

According to anonymous sources, Chinese officials held talks with Iranian representatives to encourage Tehran to cooperate and facilitate a ceasefire with the US.
