Trump said he does not consider the NATO summit in Turkey to be his last
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he does not view the NATO summit in Turkey as the culmination of his political career. According to him, the Alliance has changed significantly, and the current meeting of allies has demonstrated positive results and the effectiveness of cooperation.
During a conversation with journalists, one reporter pointed out that Trump had previously spoken of his desire to attend the summit precisely because it was being held in Turkey. In light of this, the U.S. president was asked whether this summit might be his last.
“No. I think they’ve come a long way today. They’ve made some concessions. And, in my opinion, NATO has changed a great deal today,” Trump replied.
The U.S. president also emphasized that the United States should not bear the main financial burden of maintaining the Alliance.
According to him, even during his first term as president, he pushed for an increase in allies’ defense spending; however, after Joe Biden took office, this policy, in his view, was revised.
“And I’ll say it again: we’re there to defend them, not ourselves. NATO was originally created to defend against the USSR; now it’s against Russia. But back then, it was specifically about the Soviet Union. And, to be honest, we’re very far away. An ocean separates us. We’ll see,” the U.S. president said.
Trump also gave a positive assessment of the summit’s results, noting that many important issues were resolved during the meeting.
“It was a very good meeting,” he concluded.
Earlier, Trump spoke of his good relationship with Zelenskyy.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he is ready to visit Ukraine “at the appropriate time,” but believes it would be best to do so after the Russian-Ukrainian war has ended.
The meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and the U.S. took place on the sidelines of the NATO summit. Among the main topics of discussion were strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, supplying missiles for the Patriot systems, as well as continued military support for Ukraine and exploring ways to achieve peace. Donald Trump made these remarks during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
