Tusk confirmed that confidential information had been leaked from the EU to Moscow via Hungary
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk officially stated that reports of the Hungarian government sharing details of closed-door European Council negotiations with Russia came as no surprise to European leaders.
According to the politician, suspicions of espionage activities on behalf of the Kremlin by Budapest had existed for quite some time.
According to The Washington Post, citing sources among current and former EU officials, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó regularly reported to Sergey Lavrov.
The exchange of information concerned the agendas of EU meetings and the specific outcomes of agreements reached.
Due to the constant threat of data leaks, the Polish prime minister was forced to radically change his behavior during official meetings in Brussels.
He noted that he now carefully weighs every word so as not to provide unnecessary information to potential informants on the Russian side.
“The fact that Orbán’s people are informing Moscow about EU Council meetings in the finest detail should come as no surprise to anyone. We have long had such suspicions,” Donald Tusk emphasized in his post on social media platform X.
The Polish prime minister also explained how these suspicions have affected internal communication within the European Union.
“This is one of the reasons why I speak only when it is absolutely necessary, and say only as much as is needed,” the head of the Polish government added.
As a reminder, Tusk did not understand why the U.S. plans to lift sanctions on Russian oil.
The Polish president will also visit the U.S. to participate in CPAC.
