Tusk said that Poland will not support EU decisions regarding Russia without its involvement – Rmf24
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Warsaw would not recognize European decisions regarding Russia that were adopted without its participation.
On June 19, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk made this statement to EU leaders during a summit in Brussels
The contacts between European Council President António Costa and Moscow sparked a heated debate among the leaders. In particular, some EU leaders criticized Costa’s actions, noting that he had established ties with Moscow without informing all EU member states in advance.
At the same time, according to the publication, the discussion focused not only on the fact of the contacts themselves, but also on how they were conducted and the risk of political consequences. According to one diplomatic source, Poland, the Baltic states, and some Scandinavian countries warned against placing excessive trust in the Kremlin. For his part, Koshta explained to the leaders that he is not conducting any substantive negotiations with Russia, but is merely maintaining channels of communication so that the EU is prepared for possible peace talks. He also pointed out that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself has repeatedly called for greater EU involvement in the peace process.
Tusk made it clear that Poland would not consider itself bound by security decisions made within European formats in which it is not represented, particularly the E3 format (France, Germany, and the United Kingdom). Specifically, if Paris and Berlin were to insist on this format playing an exclusive role in negotiations with Russia, Warsaw would not consider such an approach acceptable.
At the same time, as Rmf24 emphasizes, most leaders ultimately supported maintaining the coordinating role of the European Council president, noting that Costa represents all 27 EU countries and that Warsaw could support such a decision.
