Bangladesh opposition launches march over gas and electricity shortages
In Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, thousands of opposition supporters on September 5 began a long march to Chittagong. According to The Hindu International, they are protesting against acute shortages of gas for cooking, electricity and fertilizers.
Pressure on the government
The action was the first major street protest against the government of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. According to the report, this government came to power six months ago. Bangladesh is a South Asian country with a population of about 170 million people.

Participants’ demands
The opposition alliance also demands the implementation of the July Charter. Opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman told participants that the movement’s goal is to provide every household with gas for cooking and electricity for lighting.
Alliance members gathered in Dhaka before the start of the march. An AFP photo caption also noted that the protest took place against the backdrop of the war in the Middle East.
