In the city of Iksan, South Korea, police urgently detained a student from Uzbekistan aged between 20 and 29 on suspicion of a fatal hit-and-run. According to police, a cyclist aged between 80 and 89 died as a result of the collision.

The collision occurred at night

As The Korea Herald reports, the accident occurred at around 1:40 a.m. on Saturday in Iksan, North Jeolla Province. According to police, the student, who was driving a car, struck a cyclist traveling on the road ahead of the vehicle.

The cyclist died at the scene. According to law enforcement, the driver left the scene of the accident, abandoning the car.

The driver went to police himself

About three hours after the accident, the student voluntarily appeared at the police station. According to law enforcement, acquaintances who had been riding in the car with him persuaded him to do so.

Police said they found no signs that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident. He was detained on suspicion of fleeing the scene of an accident that resulted in a person's death. Law enforcement is considering applying to a court for a formal arrest warrant.
