A blackout occurred in Berlin due to a power grid failure in the Nikolaase district

A blackout occurred in Berlin due to a power grid failure in the Nikolaase district

On Saturday evening, more than 1,300 households in the southwestern part of the German capital were left without power due to a major power grid failure. The outage occurred around 10:00 p.m., and it took more than an hour and a half to restore power.

Spiegel reports this, citing data from the network operator Stromnetz Berlin GmbH.

Experts were only able to fully restore power closer to midnight, reconnecting consumers in stages. During the blackout, Berlin police stepped up patrols in the affected area to ensure residents’ safety. The causes of the technical failure have not yet been determined, but the incident caused significant concern, as it occurred just three months after a previous major blackout in the same area.

While German authorities investigate the circumstances of the outage, experts are highlighting the vulnerability of European infrastructure amid global instability. Unlike the situation in Ukraine, where energy facilities are a constant target for Russia, such outages in Germany are typically purely technical in nature. The network operator promises to conduct a thorough inspection of the equipment to prevent a recurrence of the situation in the future.

Berlin has announced a €1 million reward for information leading to the identification of those responsible for the arson attack on a cable bridge in the Lichterfelde district in early January.

The arson led to a five-day blackout in the southwestern part of the capital. The fire destroyed strategic high-voltage lines, forcing more than two thousand businesses and socially critical facilities, including hospitals, to switch to backup power during the freezing winter.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by the far-left organization Vulkangruppe (Volcano Group), which, in a published letter, described its actions as an act of protest against fossil fuels and the development of artificial intelligence. The saboteurs described in detail the process of setting fire to the bridge over the Teltow Canal, emphasizing that their goal was to destabilize the infrastructure serving affluent areas.
