Italy has assured that it will not block announcements regarding aid to Ukraine at the NATO summit — ANSA

The Italian government has officially denied any intention to block the inclusion of provisions on long-term financial commitments to Ukraine in the final declaration of the NATO summit in Ankara

According to Italian government sources, Rome has no objections to allocating funding for Kyiv through 2027.

These assurances came in response to a report by the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, which claimed that Italy was opposed to guarantees of military aid for 2027.

According to the ANSA news agency, discussions regarding the content of the final document did indeed take place, but the aforementioned disagreements were resolved several days ago.

The Italian side emphasizes that it has never opposed the allocation of 70 billion euros to Ukraine.

Previously, government circles had merely discussed the advisability of specifying the exact amount directly in the summit’s final communiqué.

The issue of consolidating support was also discussed during the “E-5” group meeting last Wednesday in Berlin.

At that time, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need to send a “strong signal of support for Ukraine” from Ankara in the form of “significant funding.”

ANSA learned this from sources within the Italian government.
