In Britain, a man is suspected of working for Russian intelligence
In the United Kingdom, a 31-year-old citizen has been charged with collaborating with foreign intelligence and plotting acts of sabotage. British prosecutors believe he may have been receiving instructions from a representative of a group linked to Russian military intelligence.
The man in question is 31-year-old Joshua Kamij. He was arrested on September 4 in Swindon by officers from the British counterterrorism unit. The Crown Prosecution Service of the United Kingdom stated that the man has been charged with collaborating with foreign intelligence. He is also accused of planning an act that could have been of a sabotage nature.
According to investigators, Kamij may have been in contact with a representative of the so-called “GRU Volunteer Corps.” British authorities believe this group is under the control of Russian military intelligence. Law enforcement officials are not currently disclosing all the details of the case or revealing exactly what kind of sabotage, according to their version of events, the man may have been planning.
What Is Known About Links to Russian Intelligence
According to the British prosecution, Kamij likely had contact with a representative of the group and may have received specific instructions from him. This is specifically the version put forward by the British investigation. The mere fact that charges have been filed does not mean that the man’s guilt has already been proven.
In recent years, British law enforcement agencies have been paying particular attention to possible attempts by foreign states to use individuals within the country to carry out sabotage or other illegal operations. In this case, investigators link Kamij’s alleged actions to a group that British authorities believe is affiliated with the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, known as the GRU.
Kamij will appear in court
Following his arrest, the case has moved to the court phase. Joshua Kamidzh is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, September 10. At this stage, the court is expected to consider the charges against him and further procedural matters.
The investigation is ongoing. British law enforcement officials may provide additional details after the court hearing. However, the final determination of Kamidzh’s guilt rests with the court. Until the court reaches a decision, he is presumed innocent, according to Reuters.
