China urges US to stop ‘false allegations’ over AI companies

China urged the United States to stop what Beijing described as false allegations against Chinese artificial intelligence companies. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that AI development in the country is based on self-reliance in science and technology, as well as open cooperation.

Beijing’s statement

Mao Ning said that all parties should ensure the open and inclusive development of artificial intelligence that benefits humanity. She also called on Washington to implement the important joint agreements reached by the two presidents and stop making allegations that, she said, are aimed at discrediting China.

As reported by Anadolu Agency, the Chinese Foreign Ministry representative added that China and the United States, as two major powers in AI, should strengthen cooperation.

Allegations by a US agency

China’s statement came after the US Cybersecurity Agency on Tuesday accused Chinese artificial intelligence companies of systematically extracting proprietary capabilities from American AI models. The agency said that the industrial use of knowledge distillation is a key part of their AI development strategy, rather than merely an additional tool.

The US agency named DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun and Z.AI. According to the agency, since at least the end of 2024, these companies extracted billions of tokens through millions of interactions with advanced US models, including Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok. The agency also suggested that this may have taken place with the knowledge of the Chinese authorities.
