Authorities in the UK are investigating Farage's £5 million donation

Authorities in the UK are investigating Farage's £5 million donation

In the UK, the defense minister and some in political circles have expressed concern over a £5 million donation received by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, and he is now being asked to explain whether the funds are linked to Russian entities. The issue concerns the donor’s possible ties to the energy sector and compliance with sanctions following the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, reports The Guardian.

A political scandal has erupted in Britain over the financing of the right-wing populist Reform UK party, as Defense Minister John Healey has publicly called on its leader, Nigel Farage, to provide clear explanations regarding the origin of a large donation of 5 million pounds, which may be linked to a business operating in the energy sector.

According to data cited by The Guardian, the letter to Farage states the need to confirm that no part of these funds originated from transactions with Russian energy companies that may be linked to the state, and that AML Global complied with all sanctions imposed following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

As noted, this concerns a donation the politician received shortly before the 2024 election from businessman Christopher Garborn, the owner of AML Global, and it was precisely this information that was not immediately disclosed but only became public following an investigation by The Guardian’s journalists.

Farage, in response, states that he was not required to declare these funds, as at the time of receipt they were considered a private gift prior to his official return to active parliamentary politics; however, this position has now become the subject of political controversy and additional scrutiny. “This is about confirming that no part of these funds was received from transactions with state-linked Russian energy companies,” reads the statement, which journalists have reviewed.

The situation has already sparked a new wave of debate in Britain regarding the transparency of political financing, particularly in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine and the intensifying sanctions pressure on Russia’s energy sector.
