Elon Musk was criticized in Britain ahead of protests in Belfast – Politico
Anna Turley, leader of the UK Labour Party, accused Elon Musk, the owner of the X platform, of allegedly fueling social tensions in the run-up to the unrest in Northern Ireland. This refers to events in Belfast, where protests and clashes have recently been reported. The politician’s statement sparked a debate about the influence of social media on socio-political processes.
Musk, a long-time critic of the Labour government, called for protests on his X platform following a knife attack in Belfast.
“Only through UNRESTRAINED and LOUD protests will any change happen!!” Musk wrote.
He also shared a post by far-right activist Tommy Robinson listing dozens of locations where people could protest.
This came after houses, cars, and a bus were set on fire during riots in the Northern Irish capital on Tuesday evening in response to the knife attack. A 30-year-old Sudanese man has been charged with attempted murder and is set to appear in court on Wednesday.
Labour Party leader Anna Turley criticized Musk’s posts on Wednesday, stating that the tech executive would not have to face the consequences of the riots he had incited.
“This is appalling. Anyone who seeks to exploit this situation to advance their own political agenda is gravely mistaken and doing harm. We saw children and families forced to flee their homes on the streets of Belfast last night,” the official said.
She added that anyone who “attempts to provoke” such unrest must face condemnation, according to Politico.
