The Spanish league will use AI to analyze referees
Starting next season, Spanish soccer plans to use artificial intelligence to analyze referees’ performance. This was announced by La Liga president Javier Tebas. According to him, the technology is intended to help improve the quality of refereeing decisions and make the evaluation of referees’ performance more objective.
This was reported with reference to Marca.
“We are going to introduce artificial intelligence into refereeing. Two key areas will be implemented.
The first is the evaluation of referees’ performance. After each match, the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) uses observers who evaluate various aspects of refereeing. This involves 30 different criteria. Currently, this is done by people; there are 30 observers for 20 different referees. With the help of AI, we are creating a tool that will allow at least 40% of decisions to be made objectively using artificial intelligence. A system is being built and algorithms are being developed based on all matches. The AI will analyze everything and indicate where the referee was correct. We are making the process more objective.
