Denmark may reinstate a canceled holiday in response to public demand

Denmark may reinstate a canceled holiday in response to public demand

Denmark’s new government is considering reinstating the public holiday known as the Day of Great Prayer, which was abolished in 2023 to increase defense spending. The decision could mark a partial reversal of the country’s previous budget policy.

However, this will not take effect until 2030—and only if certain requirements are met first.

Specifically, the government states that the abolition of this holiday initially led to an increase in employment, and this increase must now be offset elsewhere if the holiday is to be reinstated.

The return of the holiday will also mean that the pay bonus employees received after its abolition will disappear again.

Great Prayer Day (Bededag) is celebrated annually on the fourth Friday after Easter. This holiday was established in 1686 by Christian V, King of Denmark and Norway, as a result of the consolidation of several small and local Catholic holidays that survived the Reformation.
