Dubai patrol recovers 190,000 dirhams in four minutes — The National

Dubai Police in the United Arab Emirates detained three people suspected of stealing 190,000 dirhams, or about $51,735. An electric scooter patrol recovered the entire amount within four minutes after receiving a report of a possible crime, The National reports.

Patrol response

The Command and Control Centre of the General Department of Operations received a report of a theft in the Naif area. A description of the suspects was then relayed to patrols operating nearby.

According to police, officers on electric scooters from Naif Police Station arrived at the scene within two minutes. Two minutes later, they had recovered the entire amount.

Electric scooter patrols

Brigadier Omar Mousa Ashour, director of Naif Police Station, said the swift arrest and recovery of the funds demonstrated the effectiveness of patrols in the city. According to him, the station monitors patrol operations and deploys them to respond promptly to reports and maintain a presence in busy areas.

Ashour noted that electric scooters allow police officers to move quickly in areas with large numbers of pedestrians, avoid traffic congestion and enter narrow alleys inaccessible to regular vehicles.

In May, Dubai authorities established a personal mobility control unit to monitor compliance with rules by cyclists and electric scooter users. It is a joint initiative of Dubai Police and the city's Roads and Transport Authority.

Unit personnel monitor, among other things, the use of helmets and protective gear, compliance with speed limits and dangerous behavior. They are also tasked with preventing two people from riding on one electric scooter.
