Bus overturns in Egypt: 22 killed, including 10 Jordanians

A passenger bus overturned on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, killing 22 people and injuring about two dozen others. The accident occurred on Wednesday on a desert highway in the eastern part of the peninsula.

Jordanian citizens among the dead

The crash occurred on a road connecting the Red Sea resort towns of Dahab and Nuweiba in South Sinai province. According to Dawn, 10 Jordanian citizens were among those killed.

Jordan’s state television channel Al-Mamlaka reported this. According to its data, there were 43 people on the bus, including 22 Jordanians. Egypt’s Health Ministry revised its previously released figure of 16 deaths, increasing the death toll by six.

Twenty ambulances dispatched to the scene

Twenty ambulances were dispatched to the crash site, and the injured were taken to the nearest hospitals. Authorities did not immediately report the cause of the accident. Released footage shows the overturned bus and debris scattered along the road.

Road accidents in Egypt

Road accidents occur frequently in Egypt and are linked, among other things, to reckless driving, inadequate vehicle maintenance, and uneven enforcement of regulations. According to Egypt’s state statistics agency, nearly 6,000 people were killed in road accidents across the country last year. Last month, 15 people were killed and another 32 injured in a road accident in Ismailia Governorate.
