Obi and Duke attend memorial Mass for Amaechi’s mother in Nigeria

Nigerian presidential candidates Peter Obi and Donald Duke on Friday attended a memorial Mass in Port Harcourt for Mary Ordua-Amaechi, the mother of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi. The service was held at the Corpus Christi Catholic Cathedral ahead of her burial.

According to Premium Times Nigeria, former Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige and Dumo Lulu-Briggs, the Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate for governor of Rivers State, also attended the Mass.

Titi Abubakar, the wife of African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, arrived in Port Harcourt earlier ahead of the burial. Obi is the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, while Duke represents the Peoples Redemption Party.

Rotimi Amaechi, who previously served as Nigeria’s minister of transportation, is the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.

Burial in Ubima

Mary Ordua-Amaechi died on July 16 at the age of 89, her son’s media office said. The family described her as a devout Christian who dedicated her life to her family, community and God, as well as a community and Christian leader.

The burial is scheduled for Saturday in Ubima, the family’s ancestral home in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. Rotimi Amaechi was speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007, governor of the state from 2007 to 2015, and headed Nigeria’s Ministry of Transportation from 2015 to 2023.
