UN envoy María Ángela Holguín cancels Cyprus visit due to illness
UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Cyprus María Ángela Holguín has cancelled her visit to Cyprus planned for September 10 due to health reasons. According to Cyprus Mail, which cites sources from Politis, doctors advised her not to travel by air.
Visit postponed due to illness
Holguín was initially due to arrive in Cyprus on September 7 and take part in a meeting between Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, scheduled for September 9. Due to her illness, the trip was postponed until September 10, but was later cancelled.
This was to have been the envoy’s first visit to Cyprus since UN Secretary-General António Guterres travelled to the island in late July. It had previously been expected that Holguín would remain in Cyprus until the next meeting between Christodoulides and Erhürman, scheduled for September 16.

According to the same information, Holguín may initiate meetings with both leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Meanwhile, Christodoulides expressed hope that by the envoy’s next visit, a document containing the existing points of convergence between the sides on the Cyprus issue would be ready. According to him, the document is to be presented to both sides and the guarantor states.
The Cypriot president said the document could become the basis for an expanded conference and the resumption of negotiations. He also expressed hope for progress during his next meeting with Erhürman.
