In Jerusalem, Israel, police detained five people after dozens of protesters blocked a light rail route at the intersection of Haim Bar-Lev and Sachs streets. The Jerusalem Post reports.

Route blockade

According to the publication, protesters threw stones and other objects at police officers working at the scene while trains were running on the tracks. Police arrived at the site and ordered those present to disperse.

After the crowd failed to comply with the order, Jerusalem District Police officers, Border Police and the Yasam special patrol unit were deployed to disperse it. Law enforcement used a water cannon and stun grenades.

Protests against network expansion

As the publication notes, this action was one in a series of protests by Haredim — ultra-Orthodox Jews — against projects to expand Jerusalem's light rail routes, which have taken place in recent months.

At the same time, police received reports of a violent incident involving several people during a hilula. According to law enforcement, the incident caused a disturbance and posed a danger to event participants. Police said their forces continued to operate at the scene of the incident to restore order and ensure public safety.
