The EU Has Protected the Name of Romanian Brynza

The European Commission has approved the registration of a protected geographical indication for Romanian brynza, which is produced in the north of the country according to a traditional local recipe.

The European Commission has registered “fermented brynza from Taca” as a Protected Geographical Indication for cheese produced in the village of the same name in northern Romania according to an ancient traditional recipe.

The cheese is made from unpasteurized cow’s milk; the production process involves fermentation, aging, salting, and kneading, with a pig’s bladder used as a “mold.”

As noted, it is impossible to produce an identical cheese outside this specific cultural and geographical context.

The designation for Romanian brynza will join the list of 3,900 existing protected geographical indications.

This was reported by the European Commission’s press service.
