Democratic Senator Fetterman backs Republican at convention in the US
US Democratic Senator John Fetterman unexpectedly appeared in a video address at the Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas. He endorsed Pennsylvania Republican Senator Dave McCormick and distanced himself from the progressive wing of his own party, ABC News Australia reports.

In the video, Fetterman called himself a common-sense Democrat and said he would always reject extremes and socialism. The recording was shown before McCormick took the stage. Fetterman also called the Republican senator his friend.
As ABC News Australia notes, the episode highlighted differences between traditional moderate Democrats and the party’s left wing. The outlet included New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed among representatives of the latter.

The first day of the convention focused on criticism of Democrats, who were described in speeches and videos as crazy, communists, and dangerous. According to the outlet, Republicans are using the convention in Dallas to draw attention to divisions among Democrats. At the same time, speeches made relatively few mentions of Donald Trump’s policies on tariffs, the economy, and the Middle East.
The convention, which is being held ahead of the November midterm elections to Congress, will last two days. Trump initially planned to speak only on the final day, but later announced that he would speak on both days. Republicans hold narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress, while polls, according to ABC News Australia, suggest that Democrats could take control of both chambers.
