The European Commission stated that the European Union remains “vigilant” regarding any threats related to the joint nuclear exercises conducted by Russia and Belarus. The EU also called on the parties to refrain from nuclear rhetoric and threats.
This was reported by European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper at a briefing in Brussels today, May 22, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.
“Regarding the joint nuclear exercises, we have seen what Russia is capable of. Of course, we urge all participants to refrain from these nuclear threats and avoid actions that could provoke further problems of this scale in the region. I think we’ve had enough of them already. We remain vigilant regarding any potential military threats related to the exercises of these two players,” the spokesperson noted.
Commenting on potential threats to the EU from Belarus and Russia, as well as the EU’s response, she said: “We have seen how the Lukashenko regime continues to support Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. In addition, Belarus has also stepped up its provocative actions against the EU and its member states, as we have seen with the incursions into our airspace, as well as the instrumentalization of migration. That is precisely why the EU has imposed sanctions against the Lukashenko regime and is ready to impose further restrictive measures as long as the Belarusian authorities continue their activities,” said Hipper.
And, of course, this means in practice that we have been observing this for a long time and are now preparing both to strengthen our own defense and to support Ukraine.
The European Commissionhas downgraded its forecast for EU economic growth due to the conflict in the Middle East.
