Finland considers appeal in double murder case
The Vaasa Court of Appeal is hearing in Jyväskylä, Finland, on September 9 a case concerning a double murder committed in Lievestuore. In February 2026, the Central Finland District Court sentenced Joosu Tomio Karppinen to life imprisonment for two murders and two counts of disturbing the peace of the dead.
Convicted man seeks a lighter sentence
As YLE News reports, the Court of Appeal hearing is taking place in Jyväskylä. According to the newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, Karppinen is asking for a lighter sentence and for life imprisonment to be replaced with a fixed-term sentence.
According to the findings of a psychiatric examination, the convicted man had a substance-induced psychotic disorder at the time of the crimes. At the same time, the court found him criminally responsible.

The crime occurred in April 2025
Karppinen, who was born in 1992, killed his father and his father's partner in their home in Lievestuore in April 2025. According to YLE News, he inflicted numerous stab wounds on both victims.
Afterward, the man dismembered the bodies and hid them in an underground cellar. The investigation began after police were notified about the couple, who could not be contacted. Before police found the bodies, they had been in the cellar for nearly a week.
