In France, children fainted due to 54°C temperatures in classrooms
In France, a heatwave has led to a critical situation at a school where the temperature in a classroom rose to 54°C. Children were fainting and complaining of severe discomfort, forcing authorities to urgently change the school schedule. This is reported by Bild.
The incident occurred in the town of Souston, where the temperature in one of the elementary school classrooms reached 54°C. Under these conditions, several children became ill; one child fainted, and others began to feel nauseous right in the middle of class.
Following this, the administration decided to shorten the school day to end before lunch to avoid putting students at risk. Additional water misters were installed on school grounds, and affected families were given the opportunity to visit a public pool for free to cool off. The cause of the overheating was attributed to the building’s design—the school has a glass roof over the hallway, which turns the space into a “heat trap.” The building was constructed in the 1980s, when climate risks were not taken into account as they are today.
Local authorities have already announced plans to modernize the school, but a full renovation, according to preliminary estimates, will take at least two years. In the meantime, they are trying to protect students with temporary measures, which are not always able to fully solve the overheating problem.
At the same time, a heightened weather hazard alert has been issued in 17 departments across the country. Meteorologists are recording new temperature records, and doctors are reporting an increase in heatstroke cases.
According to local media, at least seven people have already fallen victim to the extreme heat. The situation remains tense in many cities, and authorities are urging the public to limit their time in the sun and follow safety precautions.
