Early Friday morning in Stafford County, Virginia, a passenger bus crashed into a line of cars, killing five people and injuring 34 others.
This was reported by the AP.
The tragic accident occurred on a highway due to the driver of the large vehicle’s inability to react in time to changing road conditions.
Emergency services, medical personnel, and law enforcement officials quickly arrived at the scene of the massive crash.
According to a preliminary official investigation, traffic on this section of the highway was significantly slowed down.
This was due to preparatory work for scheduled road construction, which drivers had been warned about by appropriate signs.
However, for reasons that have not yet been determined, the passenger bus was unable to slow down in time and collided at full speed with six other vehicles that were stuck in traffic.
As a result of the powerful impact, five people died at the scene from their injuries. State police investigators clarified that “all of them were in the vehicles that the bus crashed into.”
The cars themselves sustained catastrophic damage and were reduced to a pile of scrap metal, which significantly complicated the process of extricating the bodies of the deceased and rescuing the surviving passengers.
In addition to the fatalities, dozens of people who were at the epicenter of the traffic accident suffered serious injuries.
Firefighters and ambulance crews immediately transported 34 injured people to the nearest regional medical facilities.
Doctors currently assess the condition of three injured patients as critical, and the best specialists in intensive care units are fighting to save their lives.
